Timing Belt Dilemma
I recently purchased an '04 Volvo S60 (not turbo or R). 124,000 miles on it. My mechanic couldn't find a sticker for the timing belt replacement, and said he wasn't sure if it had been done or not. I'm hoping that the previous owner had enough good sense to change it since it is 20,000 miles over the recommended time change, but who knows.
I read about some signs that a timing belt is becoming worn, and I'm having trouble deciding if Volvo does any of those things. It does idle hard while in reverse, and has a slight squeaking noise when I first start it in the morning. I don't feel any hesitation when accelerating or any other problems.
I'm going to take it to another mechanic (Volvo dealer if not too expensive) and see if they can give me a definite answer on the timing belt.
But in the mean time, what do you all think? Should I be worried about it and/or other parts snapping?

There are no signs of a belt that hasn't been replaced. If it (or the idler or tensioner) fail, it is sudden. A visual inspection of the belt should make it pretty obvious if it is original. The belt should have no cracking if it was replaced at 105k and the idler and tensioner will still probably look new. Also, check to see if someone marked the timing marks on the cams. There are already marks there but some guys will mark them with a paint pen to make them easier to find.
+1 With ES6T, look for the cam marks. Also, the only non-visual sign you will get is one of the rollers squealing after start up when the motor is cold. :O That may be your warning.
The bottom line is, if you don't have proof, have it done. There is a chance that the car had an issue at 55,000 with a water pump or something and the belt was changes super early. I had a belt changed at 60,000 and again at 87,000 (everything). So, guessing is not at your favor. Better to be safe.
