1998 V70 XC Parking brake dilemma
A recent inspection revealed that the outer plastic coating on the cables for my parking brake was cracked on each side close to where they enter the hub assembly. The parking brake still works, but the pads stick to some extent, on the Driver's side, at least until the vehicle has been driven for a while. The prognosis by the mechanic who diagnosed this was that the pad and mount assemblies and both cables should be replaced and that the parts and labor cost for this work would be around US$650. Does this seem like it is in any way a reasonable charge for this job? Comments welcomed. Thanks.

Parking Brake Cable
I've replaced one of mine myself and the other one needs to be replaced also. $650 sounds a bit high. It took me about 2-3 hours, and I take my time. It wasn't that hard, but did require removing some of the interior to snake the new cable up to the E-brake lever. It wasn't difficult, but a little tedious. I don't remember exactly, but the part was less than $50 from either fcpgroton or eeuroparts.

Hard to remember, but it seems there were screws under the cover inside the storage compartment, and I recall removing the ash tray pointed toward the back seat but I don't remember if I found a screw there. Also, there was one more small cover near the E-brake handle to pry open that revealed a screw. It wasn't too difficult. Just bring your small screwdriver to pry up covers and have your torx driver handy, and you should be set. Snaking everything off of the E-brake was a pain.
I remember that it was a good time to clean all of the crumbs and junk from the seams and crevices.
Good luck.
