I made a right turn and BAM! Something broke. I happen to be in front of a Mitsubishi dealer when I coasted to a stop. And that is where it still is. They say the transfer case is shot. $1500 for replacement with a used unit and that includes labor. Am I getting taken for a ride? No pun intended. Is there anything I and this repair shop should know?

 

Well, first of all I'd ask the shop to show you what is broken. I am not saying they are making things up, but just of curiosity-sake. For the transfer case to go out like this, you SHOULD be hearing lots of unpleasant noises coming from the driver side transmission area. How many miles on the car & what kind of maintenance it has received so far?

I agree- have them show you. These angle gears leak all the time but I've never seen one just randomly blow up.

If yours has been leaking and ran out of fluid though, its probably shot.

 

When mine bit the dust it was never leaking i just had horrible noises
