Default Transmission Service Message at 99,000 Miles on 2001 S60 2.4T

I have read a few threads about this message already. I am going to my dealer on Thursday to see what it says. My friend who is into cars told me to just get a new car. I looked at new Accords. They make twice the MPG as my S60. I am not sure what to do. One of the threads said to go to a reputable mechanic to put in another transmission and not go to a dealership. I will think about it.

My question is what will happen if I keep driving with this transmission message on? Will the car just stop driving eventually? The only symptom there is right now other than the transmissions service message is that sometimes the transmission changes slowly from 1st to 2nd gear. Other than this problem, there is nothing wrong.
