Default Trunk Release issue

My trunk release button nor the trunk release button on the key-less entry have not worked for a few months. I read somewhere to wiggle the button on the trunk see if that does anything. Well I got to playing around with the latch. I locked the latch and tried the push button on the trunk while up (open) and it unlocked. Well I thought I had done something. I closed the trunk and tried the push button release and it would not open. I opened the trunk with the key. I again locked the latch and tried the key-less entry button and it opened it while in the up position (open). I closed it and tried.... nothing. This is strange that it both methods work while the trunk is up (open) but will not do anything in regular closed position.

Does anyone have any solutions or suggestions?

Yes, your problem lies in the harness, right at the hinge where it opens. Leave your trunk open, and look at your tag lights, if they are working in the 1st place, and if you wiggle the harness, straighten it at the kink, it should turn them on and off. Get the harness, easy to install.

Maybe they were talking about wiggling the harness, come to think of it though, you may be able to fix this w/o a new one.

The tag lights work both closed and open. I'm not sure what the harness is. I took the latch off and put it in the down position (as if it where latched to the hook) with the trunk lid open. The latch released with both the remote and the button on the trunk. I then closed the lid partially and it would not work. I'm thinking it may be some sort of short in the wires??? When the lid is fully open there is no problem.

I was trying to research on Google for harness. Is it the plastic box for the wiring?

I don't know about that, but its the wires that run up the trunk, when you close the trunk, there is only one part of the harness that has to fold, usually it shorts there, but usually the tag lights will not work. What I have done is what your doing, i shut the trunk almost all the way when it does not work, reach my arm up there, wiggle the wire, and it works.

I think I've discovered the problem. I think I have wires that disconnect when the lid is closing (they bend) losing connectivity. I think that the stretching of the wires when the trunk is open completes the connection. I've removed the tape and there is two wires that are taped near the end. One is completely severed now after pulling off the tape. I'm going to try and repair the wiring and see if that works.

Thank you for your answers, they have been helpful!

I have a '99 V70 and I need to replace the rear trunk latch. Any tips on removing the rear panel with as little damage as possible? Thanks.
