Understanding Volvo Part Numbers with Chassis numbers
So I acquired a late model S60 that needs a bit of work. I'm all setup with my Dice tool and VIDA subscription.
What I'm trying to understand is how chassis numbers affect volvo part numbers.
For example, I need a new door control module. I'd like to get a used part but some used dealers get confused by the part number not matching the chassis number.
VIDA info shows me my current part number and then 3 others that vary based on the chassis number but still match the vin.
I called two different volvo dealers and got different answers.
First dealer said, any of the parts work, its just that volvo updated to a new part during production. The latest part is what they normally order but any of the parts work.
Second dealer said, only the part that came with that production run will work.
Can anyone make sense of this for me?
Thanks,
Matt

The question relates to variations of the same part and backward compatibility of parts between different chassis codes. That is to say, Volvo has several partnumbers for the alternators used on a 2012 S60 w/ the same engine and transmission. They just updated the part during production and created a new part number.
Example,
My Car comes with part number Y...which supersedes part number X that came on models with an earlier chassis code.
I need to replace part number Y. One dealer says that part number X (which is cheaper than Y) will not work on my car because my car came with Part Y which is newer than part X.
Another dealer tells me part X will work just fine and you can use any part.
So one dealer tells me I must use a part number revision equal to or higher than the original and the other does not.
