Default Vacuum pump noise, Volvo V60 2.4 D5 2012

During last winter I realized that my car (Volvo V60 2.4 D5, 2012, 130.000km) had a strange noise in the engine compartment. I visited the local Volvo dealer and they quickly told me that is for sure the vacuum pump and they recommended to replace it immediately. I asked them for an offer and they replied with 700 EURO for vacuum pump replacement.

Because it's a Volvo and pretty young I could not believe that a metal component can get broken after 130.000 km. I started to investigate by myself and I found that the secondary vacuum circuit was not producing enough vacuum and in the idle running mode this vacuum was not enough to close an engine air circuit shutter for cold weather or for idle running mode. Because of this the shutter was producing noise because it switched between open and close position. All the other functions were fine, clutch pedal , brake and so on.

I also dismounted the vacuum pump and I cleaned it inside. After this step it was clear for me that the vacuum pump is fine and cannot get broken so fast.

Eh, looking for a repair kit for this vacuum pump model I've got the service diagram (see attached) and I saw that on the new vacuum pump Volvo introduced an external valve/gate .

When I cleaned the vacuum pump this valve was somehow blocked. At that moment I cleaned also the valve and for me it was enough but for the car not.

As the noise persisted after this maintenance I decided to replace the external valve of the vacuum pump. I paid 90 EURO for this small plastic part but it fixed my car. The noise disappeared and my car works fine.

My vacuum pump is 31258031, the external valve kit is 31430964 and the replacement is relatively easy. It takes 30-45 minutes if you have 10 and 8mm hexagonal sockets and a 3/8 torque wrench for bits.

Hi there,

I also have a noise from engine room when it's in idle.
Can you describe what sort of noise you had?
Mine is similar to
.

I brought the car to couple of mechanic shop, some said vacuum pump and some said injector pump.
Both parts are sort of metal pieces, and my XC60 D5 is only done 88000Km.
Your post a lot makes sense to me, but I would like to confirm if you had a similar noise as mine.
I reckon EUR80 is worth to try it out before buying expensive whole part.

Hi Alex,

first i would check if your vacuum pump is the same model with mine with that external valve.
Then i would with the finger if the vacuum created by the vacuum pump is one way or both ways.
The noise in my case and if i'm not wrong in the case of the video you've posted is created by a plastic switch that doesn't have enough vacuum to stay up or down and is switching between these positions.

Then don't forget that the vacuum pump is made of metal. The only thing that can be broken can be either the sealing or the valve if is the same model with mine.
If is not like mine, open the front cover and check the sealing. If it is like mine remove the valve and try it with your mouth, if is broken, will leave the air flow both ways because an internal rubber part is broken.

Thanks a lot you saved my day!!! I've been looking for this spare part number for hours!!! actually days.
And my dealer told me "we will never find it apart from our shop"... So thanks.
Do you have any pictures or video of the procedure to change it?

I mean do you just pull the valve after unscrewing it? and press it back in?
Other question, I found the seal and the valve but I can't find the other seals we see in other vacuum pump's kits... Have you tried changing them?

Hi Frederic,

in order to remove the valve there is a single screw as you can see in the picture, position 5. Then you just pull the valve out and replace it with a new one.
I would not try to replace any other sealing before replacing the valve. There is another seal under the front cover 1 but I don't think it can get broken or used so fast.

Yes the part cost 76 euros and it would take like 1 hour or 2 to change it? If I doit myself... Volvo charges 215 euros.
I have to look for the reference of the oil used for this vacuum pump in case I have to top it up after installing the new valve. If someone has the information... thanks.

you don't need to add or remove any oil as you are not dismounting anything else than the air valve not the front cover for vacuum pump. It takes approx. 1 hour. You have to remove the battery and the battery tray box. Make sure you have the right keys & tools. To remove the battery tray box you will need a ratchet, extension and sockets. To remove in a easy manner the valve you need a torx together with a 90" small size ratchet.

thanks, yes I took a first peak and saw that. I miss the ratchet extension at the moment. Thanks for your comment.
