Volvo Problems, Crunch Time
Hey all,
I am new to the forum, and signed up to get some advice from some Volvo enthusiasts.
I have a 2004 S60 with ~112 k miles on it. At a little over 105 k, I spent $1k to have the timing belt, water pump and auxiliary belt replaced. A few weeks ago I noticed that my car was bogging down at high RMPs, with the acceleration being highly affected. Around this time, the check engine light came on, as did the maintenance light.
I brought the car in, and spent another $1k to have the back pads and rotors replaced as well as a faulty fuel pressure sensor that was causing the check engine light. Getting the car back, I still noticed the bogging problem.
I then brought it to a volvo mechanic, who then told me that my catalytic converter was clogged, and it would cost $1,800 to replace. At this point, I am broke and am weighing my options of fixing the car or trading it in for something with a little less mileage on it. My worry is that if I get the converter fixed, that something else will go wrong.
I did some reasearch, and the consensus is that a clogged cat can be a sign of a more serious problem(i.e. running rich), which can be caused by bad timing, faulty 02 sensors, fuel injectors.
I can 1) get the car fixed with volvo and pay to 2k, 2) get an aftermarket cat online and do it myself, 3)go to a place like Mineke and get an aftermarket cat installed, 4) trade my car in to get something with less mileage.
I am divided right now. I like the car, but I really cant afford the maintinance right now, and am worried that more expensive fixes are soon to come. For example, I know that I will soon need front pads and rotors. I also dont know what caused my cat to clog, so I might possibly need to get new 02 sensors, fuel injectors, spark plugs. Also, I have an electrical problem, which causes my license plate light to burn out ALL the time.
If anyone has any insight or advice, I would really appreciate it. I am lost right now and need the help. Thanks!
