Default Volvo S60 D5 Diesel 2011: Engine died while driving, no error code

Hi Guys

My volvo S60 D5 Diesel face bit of a problem and my mechanic is not finding any error code to fix it.

Please share your experience.

My volvo runs smooth but recently its engine died twice with out any indication while I was cruising. Very dangerous and life threatening as I was on a highway. The car would not start immediately and started when I left it untouch for an hour or so.

I took it to mechanics and he spent two days but no luck finding any error code to fix.
I am very nervous to drive it, and now I need your help to share your experience.

Please please help me out🙏

Also, if I turn the ignition off after a ride and car would not immediately start. I need to give atleast 20 mins break before starting again.

Did you ever get this sorted? My car, same engine and same year is doing the exact same thing. It's mad dangerous to drive any distance. Searching online reveals it could be so many different things.

Bad fuse on positive battery cable
Fuel pumps
Bad battery
Bad alternator
Bad fuel pressure sensors
Crank sensor
Key detection inside the dash
etc etc

The list is massive.

Hoping you found the issue of your problem and can help me out a little. Would be massively appreciated.

Hi
The Diesel Fuel pump (in the fuel tank) was faulty. I changed it and car is running fining so for.
Also, a friendly advise, please do change the FUEL filter before 30,000 km, because that's what my mechanics told me.
Also, use Volvo genuine parts only.

Wow, thankyou for this rapid reply. I didn't expect a reply at all. I'll let the guys at the garage know to check the pump, when the car goes in.

Your issues are identical to mine on the same spec Volvo so your information is insanely helpful.

Thanks!

Thanks. Let me know the outcome of your solution. My mechanic told me that changing the pump was difficult because of split type fuel tank due to AWD system (or may be he wanted to make more money).
I also faced a transmission issue with this car that when try to start the car it say that 'gear in not in P', so be careful which u park and turn off engine quickly ... specially on the slopes.

I absolutely will let you know.

My car is FWD and manual however.

I'm not paying for this repair regardless as I'm covered by a six month warranty 😀 but getting a headstart on the issue with your information posted here has helped me. I can let the mechanics know where to start. This will diagnose the issue quicker and I can have my Volvo back sooner.

Thanks again

I'm struggling to get a fuel pump. They're upwards of £600 in the only places they're available from European websites. Other pumps are only £200... thinking I dont want to install the same fuel pump that burns out the cables which was a fault on these. Maybe it was rectified?

It's asking alot and a long shot but do you have any clue about the part number of the pump you had installed?

Thanks

ok. so that issue was the Diesel fuel pump ? right.
Well I got mine for over nine hundred Australian dollars (~460 British pounds) from the Authorized seller in Melbourne. Sorry, the mechanics order the pump so I don't have the part number, but you can easily get the part number by contacting the authorized sellers.

Thanks again for a quick reply. I bit the bullet and got a pump ordered from Volvo themselves. Very close to the price you paid. £507. Sucks when you see most pumps available for Volvos are £200 or even less but for some reason the pump for this car isn't available anywhere. So it had to ordered from Volvo.

The part number has changed from the original. So no wonder I couldn't find it anywhere. Hopefully this unit doesn't burn out the cables like the old one does. My D5 only has 99,000 miles on it and really don't want this to happen again.

31372908 is the part number just incase anyone else comes across these issues and can't find the part online. I've looked for the this new part online and again, no where sells it.

Thanks for the help.
