Hi,
My heater/ AC fan quit working recently. But this morning after starting the engine . it ran intermittently for a little while and then quit. Speed control had no effect once it quit. There is also a ticking (rotational) nose while it runs. Bad squirrel cage fan?
How likely is it that the motor is shot or is there a module somewhere that controls the motor function? I think the fan unit is behind the glove box shell and I can change or the control module myself just as long as there isn't any computer stuff do do afterwards.
The resistor on a 2013 is accessed above the gas pedal - and after cutting away some insulation covering it - is still not easy to get out with large hands. A bad resister will not make a noise
I've not replaced a later fan motor - but Volvo says you need a special tool to get it out, and to get that far looks labor intensive. For example the first step Volvo suggests in getting to the fan is "remove dashboard".
Let me vent a little- I apologize if it sounds as though I'm blaming you- which I'm certainly not !!
Remove the dashboard ? And to reinstall reverse the removal process ??? So Simple- a child could do it. Blindfolded ha ha ha !!
And a special tool to boot ? Somebody at Volvo must be certifiably crazy !! What engineer would ever OK or come up with such a horrible design ? Makes me sick to think what a Volvo shop would charge to do this.
Have to se what I can do. Can't get by without heat in the great northeast.
Yes, Volvo gives you pictures to follow, like an Ikea manual.
The earlier cars - 01-07 s60/vxc70 - to remove the heater fan motor can take 20 minutes on a good day. The resistor is part of that assembly. Volvo uses the same heater/ventilation box/fan and resistor assembly on the 03-2015 xc90. The right wheel well on that car blocks access to one of the heater fan motor screws - Volvo's removal procedure for a heater fan motor in a xc90 starts with "remove dashboard" to eventually loosen the ventilation system box enough to get to the last screw. I have read/heard stories where some break the heater fan housing to avoid dash removal!
Many cars Volvo included have built the car around a heater core, an ac evaporator or a heater motor - (240 heater motor, 850 evaporator, are 2 examples)
