Default heater fan kaput

Hi, I am a new member and I recently purchased a 1996 850 sedan.
The car is very impressive considering its age. Over the course of this week the fan began making a high pitch chirping noise and then the heater fan would only work on high. This morning while heating the car window while scrapping the window the fan made an awful noise and just quit working.

Is the problem isolated with the fan only? If so how do I gain access to it?

Thank-you for your help

No techie here, but with my 98 it was the blower motor. Similar symptoms, although mine still blew a little air.

Thanks Bulldog, much appreciated. I located a used fan/motor from a local wrecker. Now I have to figure out how to access this thing. Any thoughts??

Default relatively easy fix

Same thing happened in my 96 Wagon. Several Torx screws in and around the glove box and below gives relatively easy access to the fan and electrical connections. Fan was $75 through EBay - FCP Groton was the source.

About an hour job. I think there's a tutorial on Matthew's Volvo Site which is what I looked at for general instructions.

Good wrenching and happy new year.

I did not do mine myself, and the bill was about $700 with a local service station repair shop. The kicker was that the first unit didn't work correctly and vibrated heavily. Second time around they got it right. Would have done it myself if I was more of a wrench and had the time. The dealer bid was about the same little higher. My volvo is a 98 awd xc70.

Thanks for your help, I sure appreciate the information. The winter is a very bad time for the heater fan to go. A friend and I installed the fan and over all it was not a bad fix. I still have to replace the resistor.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
