I called 5 garages in my area for change of timing belt.
Two of them that were Volvo dealerships actually gave me much lower estimations. However they said it is not necessary to change the water pump because they usually don't have any problems. The non dealership garages all suggested to change the water pump at the same time. Hence about 250 higher price.
I find it interesting that dealership wants me to pay less.
Should I change the water pump at the same time or not? What do you think?

considering the car is 13 years old, I'd do the pump with the timing belt unless you have a receipt that shows its been done once before if you are planning to keep the car more than a year or two. Generally Volvo OEM water pumps are pretty stout - and I'd shy away from a budget part since all the effort is in opening up the front end. Since you have to pull the serpentine belt and timing belt anyways, the extra labor for the pump is nominal - excepting you need to do a coolant drain etc. If the pump starts leaking later, then you need two extra hours just to get at the pump.

 

Do the WP at the same time.


In all work done, do whatever is nearby, unless it's tons of money.
Dealer seems like a reasonable group.
Ask how much for only a water pump change.

I would recommend replacing the water pump during the timing belt service, especially if it's the original pump. It's one of those, "while I'm in there" jobs.

It's up to you. We don't generally replace the pump when doing the first timing belt. If I get a car in for its second belt at 210,000 miles, I suggest it.
