When removing the transmission, does engine oil need to be drained?
Hi guys,
Not too long ago (about 2 months) I had the transmission overhauled and the valve bodies replaced on my 04 s60. It's been much louder since then, and I've been on and off the phone with the mechanic about it and he essentially said it was normal.
Well, yesterday I'm getting onto an onramp of a freeway, the kind that curves around in a big circle and as I'm making the turn, I saw the check oil light come on which I thought was strange. So I pull into a gas station and check the oil and it's basically got none in it. I had to pour in 4 and a half quarts to get it back to normal.
So what I'm wondering is this. When pulling the transmission, is it necessary to drain the engine oil? If so, they must have simply forgotten to fill it back up and now my engine is shot.
Thanks fellas!

I've learned that now.
Basically here's the issue. The car was just fine when I brought it there. Every oil change I'd done on it previously, I got out 6 quarts of oil, and I changed it every 3 months.
Now I take it to get the tranny worked on, and 2 months later I find out I'm 4 and a half quarts short of oil.
There are no leaks. I have not drained the oil at all. And the people who did the work on it are trying to tell me that "Newer cars burn oil faster than older cars" which is so insulting I want to spit in their faces.
So yeah, I'm having the car towed to a different place and I'm going to find out how the hell the oil went missing in this thing.
Anything I might be missing, please inform.
Thanks.

OK I know I'm not going to make friends with this, but through the years various oil companies have been known to produce oil batches that 'disappear' (Mobil in the sixties - Quaker State in the eighties), also sometimes an engine will just 'eat' a quart or two ( yes, including Volvos I've had six over 21 years), and last if you did not check your oil for two months I think you own some responsibility.
