WOW! 34 mpg highway
So, I just went on a trip to NYC (I live in Raleigh, NC, so it's a 500 mile drive), and averaged about 33-34mpg the whole way.
This was with 3 separate fillups, so its not a fluke. I calculated by taking the miles on the trip odomoter divided by gallons of fuel I had to add to fill the tank.
I'm just in shock. 34mpg with an automatic transmission and fully loaded (4 ppl + luggage, I'd guess around 700 pounds). I didn't think these cars really broke 30mpg ever.
This is an 01 S60 non-turbo.
Is this normal or what?

Yeah, I know what you mean. These cars are something else on the expressways. When I first picked up my car I drove from Louisville,Ky to Grand Rapids,Mi on about 3/4 tank. Meanwhile, my brother had to fill up his SUV just as he hit Michigan (30+ gallons).
The biggest fuel economykillers arecontinual accelerations and decelerations. I have the same model/year and on my last tank I got 28.5mpg commuting. My drive to work consists of about 3 miles city and 8 miles highway. I'd love to find out what I would get on a long distance trip. But, 34 - that is awesome!

I got 33.08 on a trip from Detroit to Indianapolis and back. Non turbo. About 600 miles. My tank can go (and I have done this) well over 480 miles on a tank full. And I know I could go further. 18 gallon tank at 30 MPG is 540. That was just me but I had the AC on the whole time.

I got similar results. On a recent business trip to Mississippi I got 32.63 MPG. I have an '02 S60 Non-turbo. I run Shell Premium with Lucas UCL, Castrol GTX 10w-30. I belive I need a tune up as well, so things could be better.
I am also considering switching oils. I may go to Schaeffers Supreme which has a rep for good mileage and a quiet motor.
