1998 S70/C70/V70 Volvo VST and Keyless remote fobs and keys
Ok folks, I'm new here, just found this forum. I have some good info for you all about the 1998 year model S/C/V 70 series keyless remote fobs and keys.
Keys
1.) all keys have coded transponders inside of them. Each code is unique to each key. The 98s can accept up to 3 keys in the Immobilizer unit. In order for the keys to be proggrammed into the vehicle a pin number is obtained and used to acess the Immobilizer unit, not for the key itself. The Pin code could be the number located on the Immobilizer unit, which is contained well underneath the dash. Possibly could be obtained by calling Volvo. ONLY a Volvo Scan Tool or VST can be used to access this. The VST can be hooked up to a PC with VADIS installed; importantly you can download the updates for the vehicle through VADIS and subscribing to volvo for the updates which I think may be a 3 day access for a nominal fee. With access gained to the Immobilizer unit via the VST, each key will be inserted into the ignition switch to the transceiver inside the tumbler lock/ignition switch reads each of the keys code and then all is completed for programming the keys.
Keyless Fobs
Exact procedure as the keys but each fobs', up to 3 per vehicle, button must be pressed 1 per key fob within 5 seconds. When each button is pushed, it's unique coded signal is picked up by the Immobilizer unit and coded into it.
An hour's worth of work, LOL hardly !!! Volvo franchises are there for one thing, to make money, don't forget the salesmen are right around the corner, heck they may even share the same cigarette bucket ! LOL
If my information is wrong tech, please correct me. I'm not a Volvo tech myself but I'm learning quite a bit.

You are correct.
But the keys are a little different.
You can use a regular metal key to start the car.
You can cut as many as you want.
The Chipped keys are in the 1999 and newer cars.
The immoblizer works off a different system.
