1998 Volvo S70 GLT (Non-Turbo) Rough Idle/Acceleration
I've had my Volvo S70 for about 9 months now. It's got a little over 140k miles on. I bought the car used from a dealer where I live.
When I bought the car, it ran good. Although 3 weeks into owning the car, I had to take it back to the dealer to have the ball joints replaced on the front end. About a month after that, I noticed the radiator had a small crack where the fins are attached. It would leak a small amount out every once in awhile, but was not causing any fault codes or any engine temperature increases.
Today, as I was driving to work, I noticed my engine temperature had starting climbing higher than normal. So I pulled over and looked into the overflow basket for the radiator, and it was pretty low on fluid. I didn't have any Antifreeze/Engine coolant on me, but I did have a gallon of water I keep in the trunk. I filled up the overflow basket and then I think this is where my problem started, I poured the remaining amount of water on the engine itself, hoping to cool it down faster and not have an overheat issue. Was this a mistake?
Now, the car idles rough in drive, and shakes/rattles/sputters when accelerating. When in drive and sitting still, you can see the RPM gauge bouncing slightly from 1k RPM down to 900-800RPM every few seconds, and there is what seems like a loud thump sound, almost like the engine is misfiring. When you take off and accelerate, the car runs very choppy and takes forever to shift from 2nd gear to 3rd, but at higher RPM's (3rd gear and above, 2k+ RPMs), the engine runs smooth and accelerates like it always did.
Did I ruin my master computer? Is my transmission about to give out on me from the heat issue I had this morning? I have not done anything but run the car and try to listen for anything obvious, which I cannot. And after parking the car for awhile at work, I went out and started it, and it seemed to idle fine, but every 5 seconds, I would hear what I think is a misfire in the engine.
Any suggestions on what to look at first, what to try and replace would be appreciated.
