Question 200 S70 Ignition issue

Having trouble turning the ignition key to start the car.
Seams random and only when trying to start the car the key will not turn at all past the insert position (0), if you remove the key and insert it again it may turn the second or third insert time. Originally the shifter *** was causing problems removing the key as well, but I sprayed some silicone in there and that seams to have cured that issue.
Has anyone experienced this issue?
cheers

The cable is not returning has been my experience so it does not know you are in Park. Lube the key slot though and see if it clears up. Silicone is better than graphite as it can get into more places but will leave the key oily.

Tried the silicone through the key hole trick with no success. Any other suggestions it's a pain in the ... inserting the key in and out till it works.
Thanks

Thanks for the help, you were right about the lubricant. Frustrated after the 1st attempt and scared of the prospect of having to replace the key cylinder, I sprayed so much silicone and penetrant in the key hole that it was leaking out of the steering column cover! To my astonishment and total relief after a few treatments like that, it is working almost every time you turn the key now.

Because I downshift a lot to save using my brakes my shifter works normal now. It used to have to be pulled out in park and in drive and reverse.
