2000 S70 DIED LAST NIGHT. Need help diagnosing
Hi,
My 2000 S70 died last night in Franklin MA. My kids were driving it when oil pressure light went on. They continued to drive it, heard a bang/thump, lost power, loud engine knocking and smoke. When I got there the oil level, coolant and transmission fluid levels were good. Tried to start and very loud knocking.
I had it towed to the nearest shop recommended by my insurance agent.
Any ideas on severity given these symptoms? Engine only has 90k miles on it.
Also, Anyone know a Volvo specialist near Franklin MA?
Thanks!

From the sounds of things the bottom end of the engine is gone. If that is the case it isn't worth the money that it would cost to rebuild / repair the engine that you have. The best you can hope for is to find another used engine to swap into it.
The '99 and 2000 engines are a bit hard to find, it took me about 8 months to find one that was in good shape and in my price range.
Which engine did you have? They made the high pressure turbo, the low pressure turbo, and the normally aspirated engines.
Tom's Foreign Auto Parts scraps a bunch of Volvos and they are fairly close to keep the freight down.

Thanks for responding Lee....I spoke with mechanic today and he told me the root cause is that the timing belt tensioner failed and, as you said, the engine is likely a total loss....
I had the base non-turbo engine.
Ouch!
