Default 2000 S70 Turbo to buy or not to buy?

I am toying with the idea of picking up a 2000 S70 Turbo and was wondering if there is anything I should know about before I make a final decision. The one I am looking at it seems bargain priced. I am just a little concerned at the fact the check engine light and what appears to be a coolant light were on. I asked the owner and he had told me that his brother had changed the oil with out a computer and that is what caused the Check Engine light. I am a little suspicious of this. Other than that everything appeared ok, but any thoughts how I can be sure I am getting a good deal and not taken for a ride would be much appreciated.

Lol, and I have swamp land I want to sell you here in Florida! Just out of curiosity, ask him what a computer has to do with changing the oil?? IMO the 98's are the best of the S70's. Still a good car,and lots of fun to drive if they have a turbo...... I would run from that car and keep looking elsewhere! Maybe you will find one that the owner used a computer on and the light isn't tripped

Is it the "Check Engine" light, or the "Service" light? if it's the service light, that's just a maintenance reminder. if it's the check engine light, it means there's something going of the the computer doesn't like. I wouldn't count that car out completely... have it inspected by a competent mechanic- one that specializes in Volvos/ European cars. This part is important- there are things about these cars that mechanics who don't see them on a daily basis likely won't understand. And what was said about '98s being the best year for these cars- they are, but that doesn't mean that a 2000 is a pile of junk. The biggest issue that makes the '98s better is that they still have the cable- operated throttle, instead of the rather problematic drive- by- wire system that the 99 and 00 models have.

Good luck!

Which is why I made my comment on the 98's are the best of the series! They are all good cars, but if you are looking to skip the possible headaches, then find a 98GLT or T5

I purchased a 99 S70 1 year ago. SO FAR I have replaced 2 Heater Cores, 1) Cam Position Sensor, 1) Radiator 1) Turbo Boost Sensor 1) Battery 1) Battey Neg Cable, 1 Coolant resivoir with Sensor, I removed the dash and redid the mounting tabs...Oh wait... and 1 complete engine head ($2300.00). Now the good news My 18 year old daughter drives the car so I feel that a lot of it could have been avoided and I really believe it is one of the best vehicles I have ever owned. Including 01 Mercedes SL500, 05 Escalade, 03 Tahoe, 02 Ford Focus, 3 Chevy Astro vans, 90 Caddy Deville, 01 Chevy S10 but not better than the 03 Chevy Monte Carlo SS and 73 Caprice Classic (I was 16 OK...).

Oh, and the ETM's on '99-'00 S70's tend to fail.
