Are the 98 and 99 speedometers the same?
no, they are different. 99 and 00 are the same, 98 is by itself. Also, when changing the instrument cluster, you need to find one from a car with the same options as yours, and similar mileage. The options that need to match are: tire size and trip computer. If you put in a cluster from a car with a different tire/ wheel size, the speedo will read wrong. If you put in a cluster from a car w/o trip computer (INFO display) the function will stop working. Now, if you put in a cluster from a car WITH trip computer and your car doesn't have it... simply get the switch and plug it in- the wiring is there from the factory- and now you'll have that feature.
Keep in mind: if the cluster you buy has different mileage, you'll want to record the difference somewhere for future reference, and by law, you have to disclose this to anyone that buys your car in the future. Keep the original cluster, and record the date of replacement, and the mileage that was indicated on both clusters.
Curious- why are you changing the speedometer? if it's not working, replace the ABS module (have it rebuilt... it's cheap) first. ABS modules are the most common cause of speedometer failure. A failing ABS module will illuminate the ABS light (and TRACS OFF light if equipped) intermittently at first, then constantly, then eventually the speedometer will fail to work, as it gets its signal from the ABS unit.
