Default Do i need to replace pads and rotors at the same time?

2001 V70 T-5 with 60k: I just had new tires and a wheel aligment done. Guys at Wheel Works told me that they noticed that my brakes are totally worn on the front (car still seems to brake ok). They also told me that on volvos you need to rpelace the rotors and pads at the same time, and i note that on IPD web site they state that unless you do this there is no warranty. So, i searched the forum but could not find an answer to this questions:

If i need to replace my brake pads do i also need to replace my rotors? And secondarily, how do i tell if my rotors are "worn" (note that i get no vibration etc when braking, so i do not believe they are warped).

Thanks for any help.

Andrew

Hi Andrew,

To tell if the rotors are worn one must measure the rotor thickness to determine whether they are within manufactuer's tolerences. That' the only way it should be done.

I am new to Volvo, having just puchased a 1999 V70. The first thing I did was ping off the Volvo factory pads and replaced them with Australian made organic pads made by Queensland Friction Materials. THe QFM's don't destroy rotors anywhere near the extent that Volvo pads do. So far performance is excellent albeit with a little more pedal pressure is required at lower speeds. A lot less brake and rotor dust is evident - a bonus ! At last cleaner looking mags.

I will post a report in around a week's time.

Cheers .... Nick

Nick, I think Repco is now manufactured in Australia..............why not use them? Great performance! If I had 60,000 miles on the original rotors I would change them out...........rotors are inexpensive and with new pads you have a nice set up.
