Default '99 S70 GLT Oil filter, drop-in vs. 1-piece...

Every auto parts store website I look at has 2 kinds of oil filter for this car. I've used FRAM 1-piece units for all of my standard vehicles. But my S70 GLT uses a plastic housing with a drop-in cartridge as the replaceable bit.

Does the standard FRAM canister unit serve as a replacement for the entire "housing and cartridge" style assembly? Or did the factory switch the style of filter used half-way through the production run or something?

I don't beat on the vehicle at all. It's at a hair under a quarter-million miles, and it has never seen the far side of 4,000 RPM while I've owned it. I'd really rather use a 1-piece canister unit for convenience sake, especially since I'm a fan-boy for the silicone back-flow prevention system FRAM uses.
