Default ABS and Antenna questions

Just bought a 98 s7 T5, the other day and I love it so far but I'm looking to fix a few things on it. First are the Speedometer and Odometer, from what I've read if I fix the ABS that will take care of those? My mechanic said that's a $400-$500 repair, is that a good price? Also since the odometer is stuck where it is when it's back functional will it count up all the miles since it went down or just start from where I have it now? And finally the antenna, it doesn't go up or down but when I turn the car off I can hear a motor in the trunk as if it's doing it's duty making the antenna go up and down, do I need to replace whole antenna or is something just out of place and not connected? I'm assuming it's the second since I can hear the motor working to some degree.

Thanks in Advance guys!

Does your ABS and/or TRACs light come on and go off sometimes while driving? Did you have someone scan your ABS system for codes? etc.

These cars had a high prevalence of bad solder joints causing intermittent faults that most techs (who don't see many volvos maybe) would diagnose as simply a bad ABS module and throw a new one in. But it can be fixed fairly easy by a DIYer or there are lots of folks who repair them for about $100 and stand behind their work. But before you assume that's your problem, you need to make sure you've eliminated other faults in the system.

You can try lubing the mast; if that doesn't work you can replace just the mast (assuming the gears inside the motor are still good); ck FCP or IPD for replacement masts.

BTW: congrats on your T5; I am envious; that's exactly the car I am looking for. What part of the world are you in?

ABS and TRAC lights are just on 100% of the time and the speedometer and odometer both don't work. And I can lift the antenna up no problem it just seems like something isn't connected but I'm not sure what to look for.

And thanks! I got it for a good price, I didn't know it was a T5 until the guy drove up with it haha, thought it was just a normal s70. And I'm in Charlotte,NC!

I'd say the odometer gear has broken. IPD sells a replacment.
You should be able to find out your true mileage from the computer with a scan tool.
I don't think the odometer not working and the ABS are the same issue.

The instrument cluster on the 70 series cars is completely different form the 850s and the gear problems just don't happen with them. The vehicle speed signal from '96 and on 850s and the 70 series cars is all generated by the ABS module and, when the ABS module craps out, it often takes the speedometer out with it.

I did a writeup with some decent pictures of the procedure to repair it over on Matthew's if you know how to solder. If you aren't sure of your soldering skills I highly recommend this rebuilder https://www.midwest-abs.com/ABS_Modules.php .

+1!! Lee's writeup is the reason I was able to repair the ABS module on my S70 myself (BTW thanks mucho Lee!; I owe you a beer or two or..).

justlouiz: On the antenna; either the mast pigtail is broken (unscrew the retaining nut and pull out) or the gear inside the motor is stripped out (or the pigtail gear teeth are mangled); pull it apart to see what's up. I think RSPI did a step by step on how to change a mast around here somewhere; not too complicated..

Looks like new mast is about $15 here:

I've done about 10 of thoes masses, they break all the time. I usually do the $15 one.

I went with Matt's ABS module and it fixed us right up.

Congrats on your T5.
