Default Alternator / Key won't come out of ignition

Multiple problems here:

noticed headlights dimming, driving down interstate & lost all power (interior / exterior lights, guages, windows, defrost, windshield wipers...) car was still running & made it to next exit.

Alarm started to go off when put in park, can't get key out of ignition...
Disconnected battery hoping to reset factory alarm, no luck. Since I can't get key
out of ignition, I can't lock the door to reset the alarm. I need to do this in order
to jump start car & get the alternator checked out. Not sure if all of this could be caused by bad ignition switch. All of this happened within a day so I haven't had problems with
the key. (I tried pushing out lever on shift gear with no luck)

Thanks in advance!

Did you make sure the shift lock override button is up all the way?

Default Shifter button

If you have an automatic transmission, make sure that the button in your shifter **** is all the way out. It is connected to the ingition key switch with a cable. One side of my shifter **** button is cracked and it does not always come all the way back out after depressing it. When that happens I can't remove my ignition key either. I have to help it by pulling out on it with my fingers and then the ignition key is then free to travel to the 0 position. You will then be able to get your key out without any problem. Good luck on the electrical problem ... Cheers

put in another battery & car won't turn over
do you think it's a bad ignition switch?

It is possible it is bad. But make sure nothing else wiring wise is bad first.

Glad you got the key out. Not sure how to go about fixing the shift lock button myself as of yet so just living with it and not being too hard on pushing it in.

I agree with Tech. I would first find out why the fuse for the ignition burns out. I would think that the car won't turn over because the fuse is blown.

Does it burn out as soon as you put the new fuse in? If so, start by disconnecting the wiring from the ignition switch. Then put in another new fuse and see if it still burns out or not. If it doesn't burn out as soon as it is put in then that would rule out the ignition switch.

If it doesn't burn out as soon as you put the new fuse in, does it burn out when you turn the key on to position II? If so that would mean something that is powered up in ignition position II is shorted. Not sure of all the possibilities, but you would have to eliminate them all and then plug them in one by one to identify what is causing the fuse to blow.

Not too much help I know but that is how I would approach it. Good luck.
