Only two things I can think of and you have probably tried them:
1. There is a 'keylock' system which means the gear selector must be in'P'.
2. Sometimes the steering lock is under tension and the steering wheel has to be turned slightly to remove the key.

How's the battery doing? I had this same problem happen to my spare car, a Nissan Maxima. The battery was dying and the keylock was engaged. I was lucky since I didnt have to drive the car. I ended up leaving the key in the ignition and came out a few days laterand it came out smoothly. I'm not sure if disconnecting the battery would help, but if you're not afraid of trying I would give it a shot.
