Axle shafts removed - differential drop?

Axle shafts removed - differential drop?
I removed both the axle shafts at the same time from the transmission on my 1999 S70 and I'm wondering if I caused the differential in the transmission to drop down. How will I know? Can I tell just by looking into the transmission or will it be apparent when I try to drive the car again after everything is back together?
