I was browsing on the web for tips on working on a Volvo S70 and ended up here, and boy this is a great forum! Hopefully someone out there can help me out. OK, I have a 2000 Volvo S70 non-turbo FWD, when I make a left turn I hear this groaning like noise and sometimes a slight kick back on the steering wheel. If I go into the turn slowly its not so bad but when speed up its terrible. Only on left turns! I friend of mine says it might be the wheel bearing, if so how can I be so sure. Thanks!

Usually wheel bearing will humm when going over 30 MPH when bad and make noise worse when turning.

 

I have a 2000 S70 and other than the slight kick back symptom, that is what the problem was. The noise was present also all of the time but, much worse when turning. I suspect it is probably present for you too but, you may have grown use to the noise as it progressed and your are accustomed to it. You'll probably realize that if you change the bearing.

Since it is when you are making a lft turn moreso than when making a right turn, I would suspect it to be the right side bearing since that side will be under more of a weight load in a left hand turn. (Mine was right turn and left wheel bearing.)

I think I bought the part on line for 100-150 bucks or so and did the work myself, It was fairly easy and straight forward other than having to buy some reverse torx sockets for the T-13 or T-14 reverse torx bolts that hold the bearing/hub in place. It's a sealed bearing in the hub assembly that you have to change out.

I found easy step by step instructions online somewhere or most public libraries have a subscription to All data that you can go look at.

Well, I got under the car and I inspected everything that I thought would be related to this problem and everything looked fine. I did the wheel bearing check where you have the car off the floor and grab the top and bottom of the tire and see if there is any movement, it was perfect. So at this point I was stumped, to make a long story short, I decided to check the power steering fliud,(which I should've checked first!).It was almost empty! So I filled it up and the noises where gone, boy do I feel like an ***! Thanks guys for the help!
