Default Bought my first Volvo

It's a 1998 S70 N/A automatic. I am usually a classic SAAB guy and do have a 92 900 Vert. This car just seemed like too good of a deal to pass up, and thought it would be a fun change. Car has 130,000 miles on it, but the body is mint and the engine looks like you could eat off of it. It has brand new tires, battery, exhaust, wheel bearings, brakes, water pump, and timing belt.

Some things I've noticed and wondered if normal?

1.)At the lower speeds it seems like the noise level from the engine compartment/road noise seems loud. The snow tires are really aggressive so maybe that is it.

2.) There is no owners manual. What does the TRAC button do? What are the W..E..S buttons by the shifter? I also noticed am unlit snowflake on the dash, that lit up when I reached home?

3.) Are these cars known for a stiff suspension?

Thanks

Welcome. I used to have a '95 900 2.3 vert myself. At 156K, you could tell the tranny mounts were shot. Basically, the car would hum REALLY loud when the top was up and the engine was in "D" at idle. In "R," it was quiet.

My '99 S70 GLT has a similar issue, but only when the car is in gear. But with this car, it's the motor mount in the rear that is shot. You can tell that it's the motor mount and not a tranny mount because it makes the same amount of noise in "D" as it does in "R."

Hope this helps.

+1 with GoldWing, it's likely your motor mount. It's actually in the front of the engine. #1 is at the timing belt and they count back from there.

Motor mount, right side, Volvo S70, replacement instructions

As for the suspension, not really. Someone may have installed stiffer struts. However, Volvo's have a heavy solid feel and they may be what you feel. Once you get use to it, and you will real quick, you'll never want to go back.

Wow, that car has about $2,000 worth of recent work. Good deal!

Thanks for the quick responses. I thought we got a pretty good deal on the car. We looked at about 20 different Camry's thinking that was the route we were going to go. Those cars turned out not to be as advertised every time we looked at one. An acquaintance of mine had this car for his son and got a good deal on a newer one. So he sold me this one for $2800, and the fact it had all those things already done just made it to good of a deal in my eyes. i drove it the hour home and really enjoyed the ride home. Then I was relegated to the 04 Camry when the better half found out S70 had heated seats, lol.
