Is it pressure in the brake pedal? Maybe you need to bleed your brakes.

Usually a hard brake pedal means no vacuum in the power brake booster. You might have a broken vacuum line to the power brake booster, or the brake booster itself is bad. If you do not feel comfortable troubleshooting it yourself, please take it to a reputable brake shop.

I agree with Psaboic, although he meant to say "no" vacuum in the power brake booster. They are powered by engine vacuum.

do you hear any hissing or wheezing when you let off the brake pedal? (sign of a bad diaphragm in the booster) If your firm pedal is only on start up but goes away after some driving, then the likely cause is the vacuum pump or its switch/valves.
