Default A/C compressor not working

Hi,
My A/C compressor does not kick in. The button on the dash lights up and the fan works, but the A/C compressor never kicks on. I'm wondering how I can tell if my A/C compressor is getting power or not. The fuses are fine, but I have no way to test the AC relay. I've read the air conditioning "head aches" thread and when I jump the low pressure switch the compressor still does not kick in. I have power to the low pressure switch.
How can I check for power at the compressor? Near the back of the compressor is a large wire, and a small wire with some kind of "in-line" thing that resembles a fuse holder; what is that? Which wire should have power?
Any other tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Test the wire with the White plug inline. Both sides should have power. If it runs through a switch on the back of the compressor bypass the switch. Unplug the switch at both sides and run the wire from the engine harness to the compressor.

Thanks for the reply.
I have not checked the power on each side of the "in line, whatever" but yesterday, before joining the forums, I jumped some power from the battery to the wire with the white "in line, whatever". Still the compressor didn't kick in. I'll let you know if there is power on either side of the "in line, whatever".

Oh...wait a minute, I jumped the power to the wire when the car was not running. Would that affect anything??

If you jumped it without the car running it would just click.
Check everything with the car running.
That inline piece is a Cut off switch.
