Question Changing the A/C Compressor

I am having some trouble changing my A/C compressor. It really needs to be re-shimmed. I had it re-shimmed once already but the car has 205k miles on it and I found another compressor that came from a car with low miles. I was trying to re-shim it myself this time but can't get the clutch off and can't even access the one on the car. How in the heck do you get the compressor off the car without pulling the engine? I can't even access the bolts.

It is a pain to get it out.
It is best to remove the compressor with the dryer out of the way.
You sneak up between the subframe and engine to loosen the bolts. Then from the wheel well for the other 2.
I slide the compressor out where the dryer is normally.

Thanks for the advice. How do I get to the bolts? It seems like I would need a log extension and u-joint? Do I need a special tool to remove the dryer? Can the dryer be re-used?

A long extension and universal is the best way unless you have an air ratchet.

If the system is opened for more than about 10 minutes or so the dryer should be replaced. The dryer will get moisture in there and it will destroy it.
If I have something and they do not want to replace the dryer I remove the lines and cap them and then vacuum the system to save it.

Yes you will need a special tool.A set like in the picture is nice to have and one will fit to remove the dryer.http://www.matcotools.com/ProductImages/ACD37.jpg
