Default Check Engine Light

I have a 1999 S70 with 134K miles. My check engine light came on today. The owners manual says its related to a fault in the emission controls system. Any ideas?

You need to have the Codes pulled to find out what was wrong.

Tech, I might be selling the car in the near future so I don't want to put the money out for the repair at this particular time. My question is. If I continue to drive the car with the check engine light on am I at risk of doing damage to the car?

I didn't have the codes pulled yet. Is there a method for me to pull the codes myself or do I need a technician to pull them for me?

This is kind of weird. I went out for a lunchtime ride and the check engine light came on when I started the car and then went off just it's suppose to. Maybe the check engine light itself had a glitch in it. Not sure what happened but the check engine light is no longer staying on.

The codes are still there.
Do you live near an Auto Zone?

If so they can pull the codes.

this messege is for tech...i have just purchased a 98 s70 for my wife.it has 145000 miles on it.the timing belt has been changed, full brake job and new tires.
it now is having a/c problems. when you first crank the car,the air blows cold.after a little while it stops blowing cold.a freind of mine is a g.m. mechanic and
tested the freon levels which checked out,he did the screwdriver to the clutch and it was magnetised..he then checked the alternater and on full load it dropped in the 9,s.he is saying that it is probably the alternater not giving enough juice to keep the electro-magnet engaged?then the car started missing today and the check engine light came on! do these problems sound normal?i just dont want to replace the alternater when it is actually the compresser.i paid 3,000 for this car and the body, paint and interior is in perfect shape. please help man,my wife is about to kill me for talking her into buying this car

The compressor Gap it to Large.
I would say the compressor is bad.
The Alt. dropping into the 9's might be another problem as well.
I would start with the compressor first.
Does the Alt. charge good with the A/C off?

Did you have the codes pulled for the light yet?
It might just need a tune up.
