Default coolant leak?

i have a 98 s70 glt. recently the low coolant level light came on intermittently. about a week later, i turned on my heater and it made a loud whining noise. A few days after i noticed that the floor on the passenger side was completely saturated. Any ideas what the problem is, and any solutions?

Your heater core is leaking and all the coolant is going under the carpet. You can change it yourself, its simple. I think the core go for around $120 on fcp groton. Heres a link how to do it yourself. Goodluck. http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/index...4eed7fd35cfc37

Just to add to the excellent answer Spade has given you-
Don't delay even though your leak is slow. Somebody (OK, it was my son but I'm not supposed tp tell) waited for a "convienent" weekend and made a 3 1/2 hour drive in low 30's weather. The heater (and defroster) deposited so much moisture on the inside of the windshield (condensation?) he had to stop every 15 minutes or so to dry it off. Went thru ALOT of paper towels too!

great thread.. Hads to get towed back home and fixed it in about two hours... but the new core cost $300.00 from the dealer..
PS........ don't wait, if you smell coolant then do it now !
