Default Electrical short or speedometer sensor?

I have a 2000 C70. Engine light comes on then after about 10 minutes of driving, the odometer shows nothing but _ _ _ _ _ and the speedometer goes to 0. If I'm at a stop sign, the car feels like it's in 3rd gear when taking off. Then 10 seconds later, everything is working perfectly. My mechanic thinks it's the speedometer sensor. This is an intermitant problem. Also, when this happens, the arrow up light, the abs, the brake light all come on at once. I say it's a short. Anyone have a suggestion? It happens almost everytime we drive it. Then it runs perfect!
