Default Engine Squeal

Often times when I start my S70 there is a squeal. It lasts for about a minute and then goes away. It is not a belt and the sound comes from the very front of the drivers side of the engine compartment beneath the battery. Any ideas? I see some hoses that appear to run to the turbocharger.

Most likely it is the air pump.It will only stay on for a little while after start up.If it is more of a humming noise that is normal. If it is like a high pitch squeel then the pump is going bad.

I guess Squeal is the wrong description. It sounds like the whine of a turbine, the noise started within the last few months (so it is not normal). You can here what sounds like the turbine spooling down, when it shuts off. If this is the air pump (no belts, simple electrical connector), I would assume that something is wrong with the fan/vanes. Do I need to replace it? Is this difficult to do?

Im not sure if you just never noticed it before but the air pump usually sounds like a muffled hairdryer. But if it gets really loud and makes like a girgling noise there might be some water in it.Or also sometimes the battery leaks acid onto it and the acid eats the pump.Yes it can be replaced easy.If you buy the pump and replace it I would also reccomend replacing the relay that mounts to the pump. They will get water into them to and then short out and keep the pump running and kill the battery.

Well it sounds like a hair dryer at full blast, not muffled at all. There is no gurgling sound. I can't find any reference to the Air Pump in my Chiltons manual. What does it do exactly?

I did start looking at the cost of a replacement air pump and ran into a problem. I got the car (1998 Volvo S70 GLT) used so I don't know specifics about the engine. I know it is the low boost turbo engine. According to the owners manual it is a B5254T 2.4L, but when I do a search for parts online it doesn't list this engine as an option for this model year. My VIN is YV1LS567XW1550490.

You might have to get the air pump from the dealer.I have done a search and could not find the air pump on any of the sites I know.It is part of the emissions system recirc's warm air to the engine to help the car reach normal operating temp faster.

I think I found the Air Pump online from several Volvo parts retailers.

This website lists several Volvo Models that use the same air pump: http://www.autopartsauthority.com/oe...~oemparts.html

I am slightly confused since the B5254T engine is listed as having different specs on several web sites.

Please let me know if I am on the right track.

Thank you for your help. I am not sure if I need to replace this now or if I can wait. It appears to be working, just louder than it used to.

You should be fine for a little while longer. If you don't hear it come on anymore then might be the time to replace it.

I ordered the new Air Pump. During my searches online I discovered that many different merchants were selling the exact same pump (Part # B6010-113076) for a different price dependent on what Volvo model it was listed under. I did a Google/Froogle search for the Part # and found it for $309, instead of the $389 they wanted when I searched for my specific car. It arrived yesterday and all of the numbers match my current pump.

Just wanted to pass this along so that other won't spend more than necessary when looking for parts.

I am still in the process of replacing the air pump. I got everything loosened up to include removing the battery tray, only to find that the hose clamps are not reusable. They are the crimp on type sometimes used at the factory. I had to put the car back together to drive to the store and get clamps, hopefully I can finish this up tomorrow or Saturday.

Sorry thought about that but forgot to mention it to you[sm=sorry.gif] Loosen up the bolts for the bracket and drop the bracket then remove the nuts and unplud the relay and the pump will fall out of the bracket.[sm=headbang.gif]Sorry again.

Once I got the new hose clamps the replacement of the Air Pump was quick. It took a total of 30 min to replace it. This required me to remove the battery and battery tray and all things attached to the battery tray (hood release & cable run for battery cable). Removing the old pump was a simple task. Once out of the car, had to remove it from the bracket and remove the rubber mounts from the old pump. The install was just a simple revearsal of the process. The new pump even came with new zip ties.

My only complaint is the theft system on the radio. If you disconnect the power, you have to enter the security code to unlock the radio.

As I stated in a previous post, I found the correct Part # and then searched the internet using the Part #. For some reason most of the web sites list a different price for the exact same part number dependent on the model of Volvo. It seems that Volvo has used the same air pump for a long time on many different models. The new air pump had the same specs as the old one, all of the codes/numbers matched except for the production date (as it should be). I was able to find the pump for $309 using a Google/Froogle search for the Part # when the cheapest I found using a vehicle specific search was around $380.

Once again thanks for the info and help in this matter.

You don't have to lose your electronics (radio) if you purchase an inexpensive battery (9 volt) item which plugs into the lighter socket. This little doodad will keep your radio memory for the duration of time that your battery is out of the auto.
