Default Front Wheel Shaking/ Smoking

Im having a problem with my 1998 Volvo s70 GLT, with 124,000. The problem is not constant but in the last few days it has been doing it regularly. When driving it almost feels like the the front driver side wheel is not round. I drove for a little bit until it got too bad, pulled over and there is smoke coming from the driver side wheel. I just put a new cv shaft in my car because my boots were cracked ant thought that was the cause of the problem, but it obviously wasnt. After pulling over and looking at it I got back on the road, and it wasnt doing it. I was wondering if it could be the wheel bearing? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Also, I was wondering if the smoking could just be caused by any of the left over grease from the broke cv boot burning from heat?

That could be a bad wheel bearing, but if it's bad enough to be smoking, you'd notice something all the time. The smoking could be a stuck brake caliper or other brake hydraulic issue, or someone got a little grease on the brake rotor when they did the CV shaft. Look at your rotor- is it uniformly shiny and silver, or does it look like it has burned spots and a blue cast. if it does, your brakes are stuck on that wheel. If not, check the bearing and also check the lower ball joint- common trouble spot on this car.

I had an issue similar to this where the car felt like it was dragging every now and again. It got so bad the one day I got on grass since the driver side front wheel had locked up. The caliper had ceased up and clamped on. Replaced the caliper and the problem was fixed.
