Default General question about door locks and FOB's

I have a 2000 S70 with a general question. The FOB and door locks are all working fine (thankfully after seeing some of the stories about driver side failures).

We have lost one of the FOB's nad have read up on what I'm in store for in buying a new one and having it reprogrammed.

My question is....are there any other functions that the FOB performs besides opening the trunk and panic alarm? Does the act of locking the door with the FOB set the alarm by default?

If I don't have the FOB, I can open the door with the key, start and drive it. If you lock the door with the only the key, does that set the alarm too? Also if the alarm does go off, can I reset it with just the key in the door (or ignition)? I'm just make sure if I ever get into a situation where I don't have the FOB with me.

This is a great forum!

Thanks,

Tim

Tim, yes the alarm is set anytime the doors are locked with the key or fob.

Yes you can operate the car without the fob. Thousands of people do it everyday.

Yes the key will reset or turn the alarm off if it is triggered somehow. Just lock and unlock the drivers door with the key and you'll be fine.

Tim, you probably have already done it but anytime you have a "what if" question, go ahead and try it. It's ok. You have a fob in your hand to back out of any test you want to try.

Thanks very much. I just wasn't sure about the key setting the alarm I usually see the park light confirmation flash when I lock it with the FOB but not with the key.

I bought the car new in 2000 and it stated it's life as a Ford backed lemon. The turbo let go at 5K, 4-5 recalls, leaky moon roof, info selector switch (showed disconnect state in the instrument cluster) and literally 12 visits to the dealer for warranty work in the first 2 years ago. Fought a chronic A/C problem for two years replacing the compressor, condenser and evaporator. Fast forward to 2011 at 150k (with all the maintenance milestones, timing belt, new front suspension, brakes and rotors twice, I have probably invested enough to by two of them. But at this point....it's still a keeper. I like the smooth quiet ride and response even though it is an 11 year old car. My wife was the primary driver until last month until I inherited it after upgrading her to a 2011 Nissan Murano.

I think my next Volvo will be a 90-92 240.....I hear you can kill those. I have a few friends that have them with 300+k and love the....

Thanks again for the FOB advice!

There is a little red light on the dash that lights up when the alarm is set. I agree with you on those rwd Volvo. I think they are the cats of cars, nine lives.

Okay in a Volvo one turn locks the car the alarm sets after 2 minutes. 2 turns within a few seconds of each other locks and arms the alarm right away. One click on the Fob and 2 clicks of the Fob is the same as one and two on the key. As for unlocking it also is the same as the key. One turn opens the drivers door and dearms, 2 turns open all doors and dearms the car. One of the Fob dearms and unlocks the driver door and 2 well you know the drill.

LoL Volvo has been a Ford company since 96. It is why we got the S70 the sloopy nose and the Ford used the Volvo to improve it's smaller line.

I think Volvo was overrun by Ford in 1999. Probably had no real influence till 2001.

Ford was using the P80 chassis before that in the Taurus, Several sites say 1999 yet I was a Ford tech and say Volvo safety features that came out on the Volvo in 96 that appeared in Fords in 97.
