Default I might be a Volvo Owner come friday.

I am currently looking at a Volvo S70 Base with 160,000 miles. But, before I make my decision, I needed to know how difficult it was to replace the cv axles. From my test drive, I believe that one of them is going bad. The front end thumps loudly when the foot is taken of the accelerator. The feel and sound of thump thump go away while accelerating.

Other then this thumping problem, the car seems well cared for and clean. I should mention, I am very mechanically inclined, and have worked with suspension parts replacement before, and I have replaced wheel bearings ect. But, I have never replaced a CV axle. So, I will be performing a lot of research first.

Easy, it can be done in less than 1 hour each side. I'd suggest you have a set of axle shaft tranny seals on hand in case yours are old and hard you can replace them. You can find tips and all the help you need here.

There is a buyers guide in the 850 DIY thread that you might want to read. Personally I would only suggest the turbo models since they are so fun to drive.

The big 3 are: timing belt, PCV, and coolant leaks. Other than that they are nice fun cars to own and pretty easy to work on.

CV axle R+R can be easy or a royal PITA; just depends on how easy they pop out of the trans.

Also you didn't mention what MY (model year)? They made a lot of changes in '99.

Ooops, didnt realize I left out the model year. Its a 1998 S70 base? with a few upgrades, which makes it a GL? It "Had" premium sound, it has electric sunroof, extra internal lighting, ect.

Personally I prefer the '98 MY over the '99 - '02 range.

Here's a thread about CV axle R+R FYI:

She's mine. I signed the paper work today. Grabbed some Sea-Foam, half in a full tank of 91, and half in the oil. Drove my daughter to a state she has never been in, Iowa, turned around and drove back. Grabbed a car wash, it got to 45°f today. Got home and performed an oil change.

Tomorrow, I will jack her up and check her over some more.

Indeed, the seats are warm. The driver seat which is very worn is extra warm. As far as what I paid for her, it was about 2400. I know I will probably put twice that in her again, just getting her to where she needs to be. And thank you for the welcome. Its an honor to be here.
