Intake Options (/w Pics)
'99 S70 GLT, 106k miles.
I want to modify my air intake. I have some spare time over break, and won't be driving the car until my new ignition coil arrives anways. I considered the following options, what do you guys think?
+ Buying a K&N panel filter for my stock airbox. Then giving it more air by either replacing the intake hose from the grille with a large one (PVC?), or by cutting a hole in the bottom of my airbox and making another intake go down to below the bumper (possible water intake disaster).
+ Buying a cone filter. Then creating a heatshield out of a plastic trash can or possibly trying to weld one in shop class (would be a chalenge to make it fit right and be somewhat airtight).
+ Lastly, buying a cone filter, then making a new AIRTIGHT "airbox" out of a plastic container. I would then attach a new intake hose (PVC?) to the plastic container and running it either to the grille or below the bumper.
I saw a nice tutorial for this method in a forum somewhere... I can't find the site again though... I think it was a stickied post (possibly by a guy named STRIKER?). If anyone has a link I'd be grateful. UPDATE, SOMEONE FOUND THE LINK, THANKS. Its a great tutorial, here it is: http://quickbrickmotorsports.com/bay19/cai/cai.htm
I heard a cone filter would improve sound, which would be nice because right now its sounds pretty 'whiney' when I rev it up.
I'm also not too sure how I'm going to make a new intake pipe fit around the battery, any advice? Thanks.

RE: Intake Options (/w Pics)
Well your pictures don't work.
1. I suggest a K&N panel filter and leave it be. Best setup for cold air.
2. If you have to do something else. Then I suggest an airtight box like the EST but airtight with a cone filter inside and the stock pipe from the grille area going to it.
3. If you want to make like a cold air intake, it will be hard to get it to the front bumper underneath. However I am pretty sure it can be done. You wont have water problems unless the filter is submerged in water. Do you plan on that? I don't think you do.

RE: Intake Options (/w Pics)
Part of the reason I was considering a cone filter is because I've heard/read that it will help improve the sound. My engine sounds kind of "whiney" when I rev it up.
And I forgot to mention that I'm usually the one driving this car, but I'm not the only one. I wouldn't want a family member (i.e. Insanely irresponsible sister) to drive it through a puddle (or lake, knowing my sister) and end up trashing the engine. With that plastic piece missing (which I should replace..) there is probabally enough airflow down there to allow me to put the end of a new intake pretty high up.
Thanks for the quick response btw.

is the 99 s70 GLT turboed? If so is it the 13g turbo?
And the whiny noise your hearing is the turbo, if your car is turboed.
Also a cone filter will add sound, so would a panel filter without the top of the air box there.

The GLT should be the low pressure turbo.
The T5 would be the highpressure.
S70driver to help you some look at the pictures. The pipe that runs over the engine goes to the turbo. Then the hose with the mass flow on it runs to the turbo as well.
Not sure if the pics were working when you posted about it or not.
Not picking on you either just trying to be a good Teacher.

RE: Intake Options (/w Pics)
I found the link to the tutorial. It looks good, but still expensive and I would have to get a smaller battery. http://quickbrickmotorsports.com/bay19/cai/cai.htm
I think I will go ahead and order the K&N panel filter. Then I can have another look, and consider putting in another pipe into the bottom/side of the stock airbox if I can rig something up that would be effective, without having an intake too close to 'puddle danger' area.
Thanks for input!
Well, I'm sure whatever mod comes next will be a bit harder than changing an air filter and replacing an ignition coil. So be ready for some more questions in the future, lol! Thanks again.

RE: Intake Options (/w Pics)
ive decided to leave my EST CAI the way it is as i really dont see myself putting a scoop on the "teach the kids how to drive car". i dont exactly have the skills to weld together an air tight box or nething like that. ill probly get one of my friends who actually knows what they are doing to help me out.
