Default key and tranmission at park problem...

Hi.
we have a older Volvo S70 1998, not the turbo and it`s an automatic. We now have a problem with the engine key ...it won't come out when the car is at park..

let say we put the transmission at Park ... we turn off the engine... but now we can not remove the key from the ignition ! and also the transmission shifter isn`t locked like it is supposed to. it moves freely from park to low1 back and forth. Something somewhere doesn`t tell the transmission to lock and doesn`t allow the key to be removed.

The only way to remove the key is, first put the transmission shifter to neutral, turn back and remove the key, put the transmission back at park

where do you think the problem comes from ? from the ignition switch or from the transmission shifter, from the transmission itself , or maybe from that little disengaging push button next to the transmission? I noticed the disengaging button is automatically pushed down when this happens, even though no one has touched it .

the problem is not the key as we tried with 3 different keys..

How to fix this please? is there an easy fix for this IYO ?

thanks
stef. Montreal.

I believe that is a problem listed in the FAQ section. It's a common problem with the 850's and S/V70's. Sad thing about it is that I just sold my last shifter **** today. Shipped it around 3:00 pm.

thanks for your help and the link

additional questions :

you stated on that link :

"This is a common problem and happens more with the S70's I think. You can replace the button to cure the problem. I think a spring comes loose in there."

do you know if this is easy to do?

when you said just now: " I just sold my last shifter **** today" what do you mean exactly? is the problem coming from the shifter **** or the disengaging button ?

thanks again
stef

The repair is not as easy as changing a light bulb but most people can do it. If you look at the part page on iPd's website you can see their instructions and maybe even their video.
