RE: Looking to buy a 98 GLT
98 was a good year, I have one. Either way check what you would check with any other car. Signs of use, get repair papers, make sure everything functions. Drive it in E and S mode and make sure the cars shifts fine. Check all fluids(even though they will be topped by whoever is selling the car) All in all I bought my car with 204k miles and the biggest thing I have had to replace was my power steering rack(it was leaking slightly) Other than that its been a great car.

Here is some concrete information to use for a purchase of a 98 S70.
-check for oil leaks, from turbo lines and others
-check radiator for leaks at upper return line
-make sure turbo sounds normal and smooth
-listen for wheel hub noise as they should have been replaced by then
-check pad wear on brakes
-run car until hot, then pop hood and open the oil cap, look for smoke spewing out. Indication of PCV being clogged
-it should have NO check engine lights
-make sure the car shifts smoothly
all the above is from experience with this car.
