Default Looking to buy an S70

I have been looking to buy either a '98 or a '99 S70. The 98' does not have a turbo and the '99 does. They are the same price with the '99 having around 20,000 more miles. Which is the better buy? Thanks - KB

Well the turbo for me would make me pick the 99, but if you do not care about speed at all go with the 98

wow, 57 K on a 98 turbo. I wish

Actually I have been very happy with the 98 I bought two years ago, with 143K on it. Not without heartache mind you. I have replaced every important item on the car. Good thing the engine and trans have been rock solid. Other than that the car was neglected but I brought it back to health for sure.

have 181K on it now and is daughters car and DD. But she is going to inherit my wifes newer Escape so this car is on the market come July/August this year.

98 S70 T5, everything replaced or repaired just name it and I did it. Even have a new pair of snow tires for it too. Only thing I have to do is get a fuse (keep forgetting) for slot 13 which controls the cig lighter. Good thing there is another one in the back of the console to power the GPS.

and Kelby, it's not the miles it the maintenance and the condition of the engine, suspensions, brakes, PCV, and trans smoothness that make for a good buy.

Properly maintained these engines and trans will go well over 300k without rehaul.

Mine will.

I hear that the '98's are the best. I would also advise to get a turbo. It's actually a safety feature and makes the car real fun to drive. Not real good for young drivers, they tend to drive to fast.

Why are 98's considered the best?

Don't know which is the 'best' but I do know that there are alot of posts concerning the dreaded "Check Engine" light on '98's. God knows I've fought mine so much that, while I love the little bugger and it's gone thru my wife and 2 teenage boys, I would never buy another '98.

Of course the maintainence cost on the Turbo will be more, but worth it IMHO.. I'd go with the '99.

I have a 98 V70 and a 99 S70, IMO I would go with a 98. The 99 has the coil packs, and cableless throttle body. I have had more problems with the 99. The design of the intake is different and not designed as well, from what I learned 99 is when FORD tookover and started making changes. From what I discovered, the changes were not for the better.

From reading alot about the S70, and I have learned that the 1998 is the best overall model year because it was part of the pre-Ford era, and when Ford came along they started to screw stuff up. Look for S70 that are only part of the 1998 model year.
