Default MAF: OE vs aftermarket

The mass air flow sensor (air mass meter) failed on my daughter's 1998 S70 GLT turbo. The failure meant a flat bed trip home.

I replaced the failed unit with a rebuilt unit from Napa. It worked for a few weeks, then failed. Napa happily honored their warranty and replaced it with another rebuilt unit. It failed after 2 days. It seemed unlikely that two units were bad so I replaced the connector with a new Volvo part. No luck.

A bit of research on the web and this forum showed some folks thinking that one should only use new Bosch unit. I purchased a new one from IPD and compared the two units. There is a visible difference in sensor components, the aftermarket unit looking very cheap.

The new unit has been installed for a few days and is working fine. Too soon to definitely state the new OE part is superior, but I wouldn't mess around with a rebuilt aftermarket piece again.

A lot of reman sensors are bad news, I've found. It seems like many rebuilders just clean the sensor and do a quick check, then box it up and ship. There's probably decent reman sensors out there, but I have no names, and I usually just use Bosch or other quality new sensors, though I'll use an OEM used sensor when dealing with a customer who can't afford a new one.

I have a used replacement that I installed and then the car would not start. Are there adjustment that I have to make after installing a replacement? A used BOSCH replacement (exact part number)???

Thank You

There is nothing to adjust. Either it will work or won't. Make sure your connections are solid and the contacts are clean. My advice: go buy a new Bosch unit.
