my 91 740 GL has been having issues, with idle. i tried a new mass air flow sensor, and it idle perfect. but when i put old one back it idle fine for a few days. now, as i understand it, you can turn the car on and if it idle bad, you disconnect the MAF to see if that is the problem(as iv been told the car will idle without the MAF but needs it to drive)

here is my real Q. my car can run fine without the MAF, drives and idle good! is this right? will it hurt the car to drive it without the MAF? im lost. please help. i know some other cars dont have a MAF but i thought that if a car has one then it is needed!

 

They are not supposed to run good without it. You might have a wiring issue.

 

You are absolutely correct. I had a bad MAF once. My mechanic told me to disconnect the MAF and drive it home. I had to accelerate VERY slowly, but I was able to drive it from Baton Rouge to New Orleans. 100 degrees and 100% humidity..... It was not a fun trip. But it didn't hurt the car any.

 

i dont have to give it gas slowly, it actually runs really good. what wires could cause this?
the car has been totaled 2 times, and hit at least once more. it has other wire issues, the head lights stopped working. but, dangit, its a volvo and wont stop running!

 

LOL check the engine harness really good.

The harnesses are known to have problems (Damb Volvo and their Boidegradable harnesses)
