Motor Mount Knowledge 1999 S70
Patient: 1999 S70 Turbo, B5245
Recently replaced the bushings on the Upper Rear mount, it was completely worn out. The replacement was about a 3 in my difficulty rating, just because of the location of one bolt. other than thatit was obviously easy.
Problem: The cars feels smooth when running on a smooth flat surface, when you drive over a rough surface the car has a rattle, sounds like a metal to metal bouncing noise. The noise is not a bang but more of a slapping. The torque on acceleration seems to be okay, I have noticed a slight difference in vibration from neural to drive. when the car is in neutral it feels much smoother
What I have identified: I see one near the bottom front by the radiator. also one by the passenger side behind the wheel well, and one that is under the car from tranny to motor.
Questions: Where and what type of mount is on the drivers side. Are there instrutions for replacement for each mount.
Questions: Are there other bushings on the under belly that could be making noise also. I did see some bushings for the sub frame at grotons. are there any discussions on the topics.
Questions: what might be the degree of difficulty in repalcing the mounts and any tips to make it easier. any special tools.
Well thats the start of the thread and hope to hear from any and all on the subject.

I have a 99 S70GLT, and I recently replaced the front motor mount, the one under the crank pulley on the pass side. It helped improve the ride on rough roads a lot. Not that hard to do, there is a howto here

okay thanks for thr reply. So the FRONT is on the Passenger side just behind the the wheel well cover. Do you recall where you got the part, and for how much.
Is there a mount behind the drivers side wheel well?

I bought the part at the local Volvo dealer for about $118, I was in a hurry. You can get it cheaper online, eg

If that right lower mount, below the crank pulley is bad, and is soaked with oil, just replacing the mount will NOT fix it for long. There is a technical service bulletin regarding the front 3 oil pan bolts and oil leakage. Basically, those bolts thread into an oil passage, and oil will seep past them, and on to the rubber mount (oil+rubber= FAIL) To fix the problem, go to an auto parts store and buy a tube of thread sealant (there is a sealer specially made for this- it's not RTV) Then, remove one bolt, clean it, apply sealer, and reinstall, making sure to torque it to specs. repeat for each bolt. If the leakage isn't from that problem, it may be a bad oil pan gasket. If so, make sure to change the 0- rings when you do THAT repair.
thanks for the info. ordered the front mount last night, and I'll let you know if the oil pan boltd are leaking. There isn"t much oil on the frame now but after removal of the wheel well cover i'll have a better look.
Also thanks for the strut alert. I'm not that familiar with that YET! but I'm sure there's something there to check. Are there any posts that show diagrams, or pictures for what to expect when I see a problem. I guess my question is, will the broken strut plate be easy to see and most of all easy to repair.
Matt when you say front mount are you talking about the passenger side, by the crank shaft?
Thanks again

Isnt that the strut bearing? This is what i mean
I probably diddnt state the correct term. We call them " strut plates, strut bushing, strut mounts, upper spring perches" Take a 21mm or 13/16 wrench and spin the the top nut of the strut. If it spins all the way around, then its broken. If not its good. You dont have to apply that much power to it, just give it a little tug.

Well the front mount was totaled, completely destroyed. Removal was a bit tricky on the bolt to frame on the back side. After a bit of work and a 17mm wrench and a pipe for leverage the bolt loosened and screwed right out. The motor had to be raised quite a bit to fit the new mount in and line up the bolt holes. This took out most of the undercarriage noise. i had also replaced the top motor mount.
on to the front brake rotors and pads, I got ceramic pads and front rotors, and 7mm allen socket for $ 115.00

lots of work and still a clatter under the car on rough road surface. On a smooth surface it feels and sounds great. On a road with a just small bumps it clatters below. I drove over a few big bumps and the struts and shocks seemed okay there wasn't bouncing. I'm sure its another mount, or exhaust hanger?. Whats holds that tranny in place, the lower hydraulic mount. Any ideas?
usedS70,
I know this is an old post, but I'd love to know the solution. I've replaced shocks, struts, strut mounts, sway bar end links, top engine mount, passenger side engine mount, etc. I still have the clatter over rough roads. I think it's the mounts and subframe bushings, but I hate to spend the money and time if it does not take care of the noise.
