I am looking to get a first car for my kid and was wondering what to look out for on some of the mid 90's models. We are going to start shopping this week and wanted to be an informed buyer. I know I do not want a turbo car or a standard shift car so any information about those is not necessary. Oh ya and this is my kid so I do not want an wagon either.
Thanks in advance

First of all, a turbo is a safety feature. Helps you get out of the way. But it is fast so, you may want to avoid it only for speed. However, a N/A can do 120 mph so not sure how you will avoid tickets.
Second, a wagon would be great for hauling stuff to college. My daughter wants the extra when she needs to move stuff.
Third, there is a buyer's guide in one of the sticky's: https://volvoforums.com/m_72405/tm.htm
Forth, most important thing is the service records.
Fifth, leaks, oil, etc.
Sixth, wear, sign of neglect.
Seventh, you may want to get a car inspector to check it out.
Eight, price.
