230,000 miles. Replaced driver's side CV axle today (boot was torn & clicking sound). Used Advance Auto Carquest axle. After putting everything back I hear metal on metal sounding squeal when driving at most any speed. I removed and reinstalled & rechecked torque specs, same problem.

I replaced passenger side cv axle maybe 3 months ago and had no problems there. I don't have any idea where to start. Bad axle? Should I have greased splines in bearing? Bearing? Any advice?

Father of 3, touring musician, very much on budget, hobbyist of all, not terribly experienced nor dense. Hopefully.....

 

did you look at the brake splash guard? Wondering if it got damaged during your R+R and is now rubbing on the wheel or disk.

 

A very sensible response, the noise sounds as if it very well could be the splash guard. Thin metal scraping sound. I did check the splash guard but tomorrow morning I'll remove the tire again and look in more detail. Thanks.

 

Sure enough bottom of splash guard was rubbing against rotor. A little nudge helps and I thank you.
