Default NOISY VALVES---LOOKING FOR GREAT INFO?

1998 Volvo S70 GLT
180,000 MILES.

My valves are starting to make alot of noise when the vehicle is running. I took it to an Indy Volvo Mechanic that recommended changing the oil from 5w-30 & 10w-30 to 20/50. It has reduced the noise but I think I will need to replace the valves. Is this a common problem? Any recommendations?

My goal is to get to 400K.

You need a new mechanic...

20w50 may help pump up worn out cam followers but at the same time you are risking severe damage to the bearings on cold starts. When oil is cold and thick it doesn't flow freely into the crank and rod bearings (IIRC around .0015 clearance)until warm, The thicker the oil the more time and effort it takes for the pump to lubricate the bottom end.

You won't get to 400k by nickel and diming on repairs .

Oil pan o-rings might be bad.
