Default Please school me on the 98 S70 GLT

Hey guys... just signed up in hopes to get some good info on the 98 S70 GLT. Saw one at a dealer for $2999 with 166,xxx on the clock. Didn't get a chance to test drive, but did talk to the sales person. They said their mechanic looked at it and it looked mechanically sound and drove fine. The only issue the mechanic found was the a/c had a leak some where. Didn't have enough time to fully charge and investigate the leak.

What else should I know besides it's a 4spd auto, 2.4l 5 cylinder turbo? Is there anything specific I should look for? Anything involving tranny or turbo servicing? I was told the previous owner was an older guy, saw a newer cadi cts on the lot and traded for that.

Any info would help. Thanks!

Check the buyer's guide in the 850 section. They are very comfortable cars.

Fun little drive. Great "around town car' , though fuel efficiency isn't that good.

Check Engine light problems endemic on S70s. Make sure the bulb is working. Can be a bear to fix. So can the Elec. Climate Control.

Other than that, relatively easy to work on, great bang for the buck. High quality car.

Next to the '94 thru '97 MY 850 line, the '98 MY S70 was the best car volvo has produced IMO. Not to suggest they don't break, but if well maintained, they will last a very long time and quite fun to drive. And when they need service they are relatively easy to work on, even for a DIYer.

Find a competent local tech and have him/her ck it out before you buy if possible. AC issue is likely the evaporator leaking; one of few weaknesses of this car.

CAM Belt one bolt allows you to see it. If it breaks you have to fix the motor.

i just bought a 98 s70 glt for 3,200 with 92,xxx miles on it. it works fine except im a little concerned. the previous owner handed me a bunch of paper work tht i didnt look thru until now and its very detailed up to bout 57,000 miles. then blank. the owner mentioned that it was his wifes car that passed away but still 92,xxx miles with a bunch unaccounted for was iffy. im susupicous now of wat to do b/c both headlights went out and the abs signal comes on and off, and the coolent light came on and off twice and now the check engine light and service light are on, im new to this car thing so seeking advice on wat to do .

CAM belt must be done every 70.000 or you will get to rebuild the top end of the motor. maybe they did not put any documentation in the folder after 57K because the wife filed it. My first owner did good, my second owner did okay and me well I never found any cam belt change noted except someone looked at it at 120K and said it looked good so they thought is was changed. I got to it to 167K and I was real close to breaking my motor. The belt had broken belt filaments and rough edges in a spot and that is all it takes.

ABS is a oh well I ignore my light. The check engine yes it is due. Get the codes: MAF, EGO and vacuum leaks will be common. Use a good MAF not Autozone/O'Reilly type, Bosch EGO sensors and Shop at IPDusa.com, eeuroparts.com and fcpgroton.com for parts.
