Putting a turbo in a N/A S70 20V
Hey guys Im a long time viewer of this website and just recently started posting, I had a question for you guys, I have a 98 S70 that is non turbo and I want to put a turbo on it.. Im not talking about a factory Volvo turbo but maybe one that makes a little more boost. What do you all suggest I need to start, I have roughly 3 grand of disposable cash that I can throw at it and I am ready to go now, what websites, things I should look out for, etc I will be doing this myself, I have done a turbo install on my 93 Cobra but I am pretty much clueless on these volvo motors. Any help at all will be appreciated and once I start I can post all the pics and step by step for anyone else that wants to do it if you all want. Thanks again. Also I was thinking about this for the complete kit to make it easier for me but do I need to adjust the ecu? http://www.volvomotorsports.com/cata...roducts_id=106
Welcome to the forum.
I am going to tell you that your going to be in for a trip if you do this and a lot of money and time. Honestly it isn't worth it to turbo your N/A. I would suggest you sell your N/A and buy a turbo model and with the $3k spend that in modification to it.
Items Needed to Turbo
1. Turbo
2. Downpipe
3. CAT
4. Catback
5. Turbo hoses
6. Intercooler
7. Intercooler hard pipes
8. Vaccum lines
9. Water or oil lines for your turbo
10. Exstensive ECU tuning, this means dynoing a lot to get it right.
11. Boost gauge
12. Wideband 02 gauge
13. Etc...
Also your not going to be able to run gobs of boost if you do this. I wouldn't run more then 7-12 PSI max. The engine just wont be able to handle it as well as an already turboed Volvo model.
Also do not buy from VMS, they are horrible.

We have answered this question many times the same way. Sell the NA for as much as you can get for it then buy a Turbo model and add performance parts from there. My understanding is that putting the turbo on the NA model is more work than it's worth because of the computer and everything. It's not the mechanical part as much as the electronic. The factory Turbo models are certainly easy enough to find. You will get the same advice at volvospeed.com also.
Wow I didnt realize how much of a pain it would be... the Cobra wasnt nearly as bad as that. Well this is my daily driver and its got low miles (80,000) so Im not sure now what Im going to do maybe Ill throw some 850r wheels on it, lower it a little and call it a day. Im a painter at a autobody shop so maybe Ill even repaint it one weekend but if its gonna bite me that hard to turbo it I may have to pass on that idea... which is too bad cause its slow as hell. Maybe im just used to the Cobra. Anyhow thanks for your suggestions and Jim to be honest I really dont like Volvospeed Ive checked it out once or twice in the past but I like this site much better and will continue to read and post here Thanks again.

I stay away from volvospeed also, but sometimes you can go there for some answers. Guys can be rude over there that's for sure.

Mainly because I am doing research on the Yellow T5-R's
Honestly sell it if you want power from a Volvo, and buy a turbo model you will be pleased. Trust me. I had a 1995 850 N/A and modded it mainly audio mods, some exterior and suspension and a couple performance mods. My car still went nowhere fast. Then I got this car I have now which is turboed and I love it.

Hi, I am not the expert on this, but costwise it's usually cheapest to get something setup from the factory vs a custom job... and usually a factory high output motor and drivetrain are beefed up to handle the higher loads that they will be put under, so it's also a reliability question - if you increase torque and horsepower by 25%+ without doing anything else, I think that's a recipe for trouble, at least if you run it hard.
I have the same car you do now, and if you want to do some suspension upgrade, I can definitely recommend using Koni Sport shocks and IPD sway bars - really improves the handling without too much of a hit on ride, and retain stock ground clearance and suspension travel. Adding lowering springs to that will make handling even crisper, but have a more negativeimpact on ride, and also reduce suspension travel, can also have road clearance issues withspeed bumps, potholes, curbs, deep snow, etc, so I stayed away from those.

Well I will take all these things into concideration, I mean I love the car but like I said its just slow as hell. I live in Boston so Ill have to deal with it for the winter because they get pretty bad around here. Maybe Ill sell it next spring or just keep it and do a couple stereo mods and some wheels, so if any of you guys got 850r wheels or V70 r wheels for sale let me know cause that just might be the only thing in its future. Thanks again
